According to Digi-Capital, the augmented reality (AR) industry is expected to reach $83 billion by 2021.  Growing interest in the technology has partly been fueled by Nintendo/The Pokémon Company/Niantic’s surprise hit with Pokémon Go.  In 2016, the ultra-popular game generated more money than the entire virtual reality games software market. In the first quarter of the year, players accounted for $600 million in mobile AR revenue.

Marketers perked up and directed their attention to the innovative technology.  They clamored for ideas to implement computer vision into their branding strategies.  The latest generation of AR goes beyond Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) by helping generate more accurate, three-dimensional maps of space that facilitate real-time interaction with the environment.

Brands which have already developed apps to use with their product lines include Ikea and Pottery Barn.  Rather than relying on imagination, potential customers can now virtually place actual-size furnishings inside their homes.  No more guessing if a piece will fit, size or color wise.

Lampix goes one step further.  The company’s interactive tabletop augmented reality system means that a fashionable LED table lamp (which houses a high definition projector and camera) creates a communal experience for several people without the need for wearables.  A family can comfortably sit around a dining room table and converse freely about the merits of decorating the living room with garden gnomes, disco balls and bean bag chairs.

The possibilities are endless for home, office and beyond.  Imagine sitting in an airport lounge and simply placing your boarding ticket under the lamp to find out which gate your plane will depart from, and seeing a map with directions on how to reach that gate.  Imagine playing your favorite games without having to manually keep score or losing pieces everytime your friends get together. And never having to keep track of your phone’s whereabouts or how much battery you have left.

Augmented reality is ready to explode, and generate billions in profit for those willing to leverage its potential.  The time is now.
